Chords
Use the chords page to assist with this stage3. Either in one large group or in smaller groups, compose some chords by adding notes one by one, from the bottom up.
Make the chords by experimenting with either:
- major or minor thirds
- tones or semi-tones and thirds
- major or minor thirds and ninths or sevenths
3.1 Orchestrate these among the large group/groups to produce chords of contrasting colour and range.
3.2 Decide on a slow rhythm to play the chords to.
Experiment with regular and irregular rhythms.
Listen carefully to the decay of each chord.
3.3 Find contrasting ways to play or colour the notes of the chords e.g. using different beaters, plucking instead of bowing or by playing a trill instead of a straight note.
3.4 Perform and discuss.

3.5 These chords can be used to break up the series of melodies and textures already composed. Try finding just the right place for each chord sequence.
