Follow the instructions below to download and and install Quicktime 3 for Macintosh and Windows

What is QuickTime 3

QuickTime itself is not an application, it is an enabling technology. QuickTime is comprised of pieces of software that extend the ability of your operating system to handle dynamic media. Applications then use this technology and turn it into the applications and games. Many games and reference titles have incorporated QuickTime into their development: Myst by Broderbund, Microsoft Encarta by Microsoft, DOOM II by Id Software to name a few. In addition, QuickTime is the basis for many of the industry's most respected digital media tools.

However, QuickTime is much more then just video and sound. It is a true multimedia architecture that allows the integration of text, still graphics, video, animation, 3D, VR and sound into a cohesive platform. QuickTime makes it easy to bring all of these media types together.

What is the QuickTime Plug-In?

Apple's QuickTime Plug-in for Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer lets you experience QuickTime content directly in the browser window. You no longer need a separate helper application to view QuickTime content over the Internet. You can also view QuickTime VR panoramas and objects right in your browser. And because the QuickTime Plug-in supports streaming, there's no delay - you can begin viewing the video immediately.

Installing Quicktime

Windows Installation

1. QuickTime takes advantage of DirectDraw for optimal video performance, and DirectSound for audio synchronisation. It is important for you to have the latest drivers for your video and sound cards. You can also search for your specific driver. You may also need the current version of DirectX.

2. Download QuickTime 3.

NOTE: The default name of the file is a randomly generated name, rather than "QuickTime30.exe". You need to either rename it in the Save dialog box or take note of the randomly generated name, so you can find the downloaded file in order to double-click it in the next step.

3. After you have downloaded QuickTime 3, double-click on the 'QuickTime30.exe' image to start the installation process.

4. Follow the installation wizard's instructions (you must OK the License agreement) to complete the installation process.

5. Enjoy QuickTime.

Macintosh Installation

1. Download the QuickTime 3 software from the Apple web-site. Note: you may download either the single file option (MacBinary, which is smaller, or BinHex which is more compatible) or if you are using a slower connection (14.4 modems) you can select the segmented file option which uses five smaller files to download QuickTime 3. (the segmented installation process is similar to the steps below but with five files)

NOTE: The file that is downloaded has a randomly generated name, rather than one containing "QuickTime". In most cases, Mac OS browsers are configured to automatically handle downloaded files (in the MacBinary or Binhex format), so the downloaded file will be decoded and you will get, as the instructions indicate, a file called "QuickTime 3.smi". However, if your browser doesn't do this automatically, you will need to specify a new name in place of the randomly generated name in the Save dialog box, or take note of the name as the file is being downloaded before continuing.

2. After the file is finished downloading, double-click on the 'QuickTime 3.smi' file. This will create an icon on your desktop called 'QuickTime Installer'

3. Double-click on the 'QuickTime Installer' image to open it.

4. Read the 'QuickTime READ ME', then double-click on the 'Installer' file that is visible. This starts the installation process.

5. Read the first window of the installation process and select continue. You will then be presented a license agreement that you should review, accept the license agreement by clicking on the 'Agree' button. You then select the volume on which you want to install QuickTime 3, and click on the 'Install' button.

6. After the installation is finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. You must do this to begin using QuickTime 3.

7. Enjoy QuickTime.
