Representative Sampling

If you think a sampler is a piece of 19th-century board-school embroidery you should consider improving your aquaintance with music and technology.

David Sheppard offers some advice on where to begin, looking at recording, sampling and sequencing equipment.

In a former guise as university lecturer I used to run a course called 'Music Technology - Friend or Foe?', where I asked students to investigate the uses of technology for the musician. Interesting debates ensued with strong cases for and against its use in all areas of musical activity, including education. It is an even-sided debate which will continue with every new development. The fact is that technology can be a real benefit to the musician, but can also create problems. What is important is that the end-user receives guidance, and that the student learns to use technology from a musical viewpoint and not a technological one. Of course this is not necessarily easy for the music teacher. Whether the curriculum demands it or the fact that students are already using it at home, music technology is part of modern music education and many teachers have found themselves in need of new training and resources with limited time and/or budget.

So, what can you do? The good news is that there are now many courses, books, magazine articles and internet resources available for the music teacher. Technology is cheaper and readily available and the government is offering far more funding than ever before. Your biggest problem however, is taking the first steps. This article aims to introduce you to some important basics, but always remember that technology is just a tool. It will help you to teach your subject, expand your instrument resources and introduce you to new skills.
