FINISHING TOUCHES
6. Recap all the material made so far during the project. There should be:
a) an improvised open form section with different combinations of long notes and short notes played by groups of sustaining and non-sustaining instruments (1.4).
b) a series of four chords based on the Dérive chord played by each of the smaller groups (2.3/2.4).
c) six-note melodies played by each of the smaller groups (3.2 - 3.4).
d) six-note melodies combined with Dérive chords played by pairs of smaller groups (3.5).
e) twelve-note melodies and their canons played by each smaller group (4.3/4.4).
f) heterophonic texture played by each half of the group (5.4).
6.1 Find a structure, an order, for the material above, bearing in mind that some sections may fit together with others. For example sections c and f may work well combined.
Some sections may well need to be used twice, others may still need something added, but this should only be a reworking of something already in existence, not an entirely new idea.
If more rhythms are needed they should be as free and flexible as possible. Additional pitches should be based on intervalic relationships of sevenths, ninths and tri-tones.
6.2 Like many of Boulez's own works, your piece could exist in an open form where each small group determines the structure and ordering of all the separate sections.
6.3 Take time to rehearse the piece getting used to the changes from section to section.
- Does the music suggest a title?
6.4 Perform and record your piece. Listen to it followed by Boulez's Dérive. Discuss!
