IRCAMIRCAM is the Institut de recherche et co-ordination Acoustique/Musique and is based at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. With Boulez as director, it opened in the late 1970's as an uncompromising, government sponsored research institute for supporters of the avante-garde, where scientists and musicians could work together to pursue a philosophical way forward in music technology and composition.
Darmstadt
The home of an International summer course for new music begun in 1946. Messiaen attended between 1949 and 1951 and Boulez taught at the school from 1955 up until the mid 1960's.
Serialism
A method of composing by ordering the twelve notes of the chromatic scale into a row or series and presenting them one by one before reusing them in different transformations or patterns to extend pitched material.
Integral Serialism
A technique of composition that divides not only pitch but rhythm, timbre, volume and modes of attack into a series for statement and transformation, which in some cases can lead to the pre-determination of all of a work's musical parameters.
Music made up of many lines which are based on the same melody or group of pitches, although they may sometimes be perceived as quite separate elements.
A technique often used by Olivier Messiaen.
Chance
A term used for music in which the compositional procedures are dependent on the element of chance. A way in which composers tried to remove the sense of personal expression from the process of creation. This method together with other varieties of indeterminacy where employed to a great extent by John Cage.
